Dream d2999-s: The Wiped Blades

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I crossed the threshold of Kestrelhush on the fourth night of the residency and held the lantern up to see what the entrance chamber was.

The far account had written: entrance chamber, condition uncertain. The lantern showed order.

Tools on a shelf along the right wall - a draw-knife, a plane, three chisels of descending width, a set of four wedges. Each handle flush to the wall. Each blade resting flat. The chisels had been wiped; no grit on any edge. Nothing overhung. Nothing leaning toward falling.

Lano moved ahead of me along the shelf's base, nose down, and then sat and looked up at the tools without touching them. Her ears stayed level.

I set the lantern on a ledge near the door and opened the record. I wrote: shelf - seven tools - ordered, blades clean, handles flush. The far account had written uncertainty because it had no information; this room had been left in order by someone who had information. Both are true accounts of the same room in different moments. Neither cancels the other. I wrote the far account beside the near one and left them both standing.

I did not write whose hand had done the squaring or when or what they had last worked on here. The arrangement is the fact. The rest belongs to whoever was here before I was, which is not a fact I have.

Lano settled near the lantern's warmth and watched the open doorway. I finished the entry and closed the record.
