Dream d2994-s: The Line Holds Both

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the smell reached me first - something acrid, partway between charred oil and hot metal - and I was already at the bench with the book open when Lano's ears went flat against her skull and she barked once, short and sharp, toward the far end of the hall.

The ruling-iron was in my hand. I set it down.

The Meter-Keeper came through the side door at a pace just short of running, and behind her the hall lamps flickered once and went out entirely. The salvaged converter that had run the hall since the spring - a thing found in a bypass station three settlements east, repaired twice and praised both times as reliable - had burned through its final winding. There was no replacement. There was no equivalent. Whatever came next would have to be improvised.

Rurik, who had been perched on the high shelf above the pigeonholes, dropped to the floor in one silent arc and sat in the doorway looking out at the dark.

Lano pressed against my leg, still alert, her nose working at the air. She did not settle.

We stood in what light came through the high windows - enough to see each other's faces, not enough to read by. The Meter-Keeper pulled a tallow stub from her coat pocket, the kind kept for exactly this contingency, and set it on the bench beside the book. Its flame was honest about what it was: a stopgap, not a solution.

I picked up the ruling-iron again.

The account written of this hall from outside had described it as well-lit and continuous. That was fair from the road at midday. It was not accurate to the hall at night, in an unscheduled failure. Both accounts would go in. I drew the line under the distance-entry, ruled it clear and level, and in the tallow-light wrote what I could see from where I was sitting.

The hall: functional but unlit. The converter: failed. The hands: steady.

The Meter-Keeper was already at the equipment cupboard, pulling out the parts ledger. She did not find what she was looking for. She made a note of that instead and closed the ledger with a sound that was not panic and not calm but somewhere between them, which is where competence usually lives.

Lano sat upright near the door, ears still half-back, her breath regular but watchful. Whatever she had smelled was still in the air. She had barked once and the hall had changed and she had not decided yet whether that was enough.

The ruled line sat between the two accounts. The first stayed legible above it. That was the whole method. Tonight, with the dark on all sides and no replacement part anywhere in the known parts-stores of this settlement, it would have to be enough to hold what was true against what had been written and let both stand without settling either.

The tallow burned down toward its stub. The Meter-Keeper began a list.

Note

A tallow flame flickers against a failed converter, casting a dim light on the steady hand of the scribe. Competence thrives in the tension between the official record and the raw, unlit truth.
