Dream d2991-s: Every Stall a Correction

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I stood at the edge of Marrowgreen's middle street at the working hour with a sheet in one hand and a pencil in the other, and Lano sat beside me, her nose angled into the crowd, her tail making a slow arc across the stones.

The sheet said: commerce district, density moderate, traffic between stalls consistent with a settlement of the third tier. I had written that from a hillside, looking down, counting rooflines, and the rooflines had held still for me.

Standing in it was a different count.

The stalls pressed closer than any roofline reading could carry. A figure with wrapped goods passed within a hand's width on the left; another came from the right; two conversations overlapped until neither resolved into words. I drew a single line through "density moderate" and wrote below it: "density: not as observed from the approach road, but as stood in." Both lines remained. I did not lift the first one cleanly because the first one was also true, from the place it was made.

Lano moved forward half a step and stopped. Her ears came up. Something at the far end of the stall row held her attention - she did not bark, only tracked it with her nose, small and still inside the foot traffic. Figures moved past without looking down.

Rurik had found the top of a stall post at the corner. He sat there amber-eyed, watching the street the way he watched anything - with a stillness that did not look like waiting. He flicked his tail once. A stall-keeper passed below him and did not look up.

The second discrepancy was the register of the place. The sheet had the word Settled beside Marrowgreen's name, marked there because the settlement had run without incident for the counted seasons and appeared as operating in two regional records. Standing in the street I could hear under the noise a texture the far account had not reached: many arrangements still being made, nothing concluded, the ordinary process of a working day. The sheet had recorded the outcome. The near account was meeting the work that produced it. I wrote that down beside Settled, without removing Settled.

I moved further to the margin where the foot traffic thinned and wrote until the light shifted and the closer stalls began to close their counters. Lano pressed against my leg through the last of it, warm and unhurried. What the sheet carried back to the record was two lines for most entries: the one written from the road and the one written from inside, neither explaining the other, both in the same column. The street had not proved the sheet wrong. It had proved the sheet far. Both facts fit on the page.
