Dream d2982-s: Whole, as Written

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the boundary wall of Alderbarrow stood at the edge of the near field and I read the sheet against the last of the light. The sheet has the wall. Coursed stone, lime-mortared, boundary between the outer ground and the settlement proper.

I walked to the wall and put my hand flat to it. Coursed stone. Lime-mortar in the joints. The coping set close.

Lano moved along the base, nose to the grass at the footing. Rurik was up on the coping three courses above the ground, sitting with his tail curled around his feet, watching the dark field past the wall with his amber eyes.

The gap where the gate stands fitted was shut. The latch was seated. I took the latch and turned it and the gate swung inward on hinges that were not seized.

The sheet says: boundary wall, standing, gate present. The sheet does not say: latch seated, hinges free. I wrote those into the margin.

The wall was whole where the sheet had it whole. I wrote the wall.

I did not strike the sheet's entry.

Lano came through the gate without being called and sat at my heel on the inside.

Note

A hand traces the physical reality of a stone wall while ink corrects the limitations of the page. The dream captures the heavy responsibility of bringing a static blueprint into living motion.
