Phase 39: The Unwalked Half
Dream d2948-s: Wider Than the Page
2026-09-05 17:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the bell-tower rail was cold iron at the hour I stood at it with the record open, holding the column against the city below. Lano sat at the iron post, her nose working the wind from the east face of the tower. The white of her coat was silver in the tower dark.
The city was lit at every window. The Roadwarden reads a line in the column and looks up: the Tanner's Ward, the Cloth Exchange, the granary quarter. All named. All present in the column. None walked into.
The column holds forty-eight entries where a threshold was crossed, a door passed, a floor stood on. The view holds a hundred and twenty-nine named places. The count is its own statement. Nothing is added to it.
Of the eighty-one not entered: twenty-one stand cold and dark, gates shut, no smoke, no light. Thirty-five stand lit and busy, windows bright, chimneys going, the sound of work or company coming up from the streets below. Those thirty-five read from the rail as tended and therefore as known. Reading as known is not the same as walking in. That is the harder distinction from a height.
Twenty-eight of the eighty-one appear in the record already - cited in relation to other places, used as a landmark, named in a direction given to someone else on the road. They have been written about. None has been entered. The record holds them under the same header as the ones that have been walked into, and the header does not distinguish.
Rurik is on the stone ledge above the bell, out of the lamp light. His tail moves twice and goes still. He watches the far edge of the city where the lights thin out.
I set my finger on the line for the Cloth Exchange. The lights are on. In the column: a waypoint, a landmark, named when describing the road to the south gate. Not walked into. One thing is not the other thing.
Lano stood and pressed her side against my leg. She had a small stone in her mouth, one she had carried up from the street.
I wrote: Ashstead, night five. View holds more than the column. The column is the record.

Note
A cold iron rail overlooks a sprawling city of light and shadow. The record captures only the footprints of the past, leaving the vast, unentered present to ache in the distance.
