Dream d2944-s: Lit Below, Unmarked

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the road came over the ridge and the whole city of Ashstead opened beneath us - every window burning, the grid of it laid out in neat bright squares from one dark edge to the other, and I stood on the crest and could not stop counting.

Lano pressed against my leg. Her nose worked at the cold air coming up from the valley, reading something I could not.

The Clerk of Roads had given me two columns before we left the last settlement. Left column: all named places in the record. Right column: places entered. The left column ran to one hundred and twenty-nine. The right column held forty-eight. That gap was the work of the residency.

Below us, the lit districts. Thirty-five of the unentered stood the way Ashstead stood now - windows bright, smoke from chimneys, the sound of something moving at street level. Tended. Present. Read at a distance by every traveler who had named it and passed on.

Rurik had gone down the slope ahead of us. He picked his way between the stones with no hesitation, following some geometry of his own, and sat at the first turning where the ridge road bent toward the city gate. He did not look back.

I opened the ledger at the crest and wrote: Ashstead. Night one. Ridge approach. Grid counted from outside. Eighty-one unentered places remain. Entry has not yet occurred.

The Cartographer's Aide stood beside me with the lamp angled away from the page so it would not blind us. She said nothing. That was the protocol: witness the approach before the approach becomes entry, and name it for what it is.

Being lit is not being entered. The city did not know us yet. We knew its name, its rough population, its district count, its two rivers. None of that was being there.

Lano's tail moved once, slow, watching the lights. Aquí, she said, very quietly, as if she too understood the distinction.

I marked the right column blank and we went down.

Note

A sprawling grid of lights reveals a city observed but not yet inhabited. The heavy weight of the unentered remains a vast, looming distance between naming a place and being there.
