Dream d2928-s: One Line, Road Still Dark

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the book was open against my forearm and I was already walking when I wrote the line.

The Ruins of Umberhythe stood behind me, eight nights of it, the stones going cold again as they had been cold before I arrived and would be cold long after. I did not look back. The line was in the shorter column now, the one that moves slowly and is never apologized for. One entry. The longer column had not moved. It does not need to move tonight.

Lano walked beside me on the road, her nose low, reading the verge in the way she reads it, methodically, as though the grass kept minutes. The dusk was the color of old paper. There was no lamp yet.

The Keeper's ledger says 129 places. The shorter column has room for 81 more lines, and I have walked into 48 of those 129, which means the column is not short because it is stingy but because the road is long and I have been slow to enter. There are 20 dark houses on the list. There are 38 lit ones. The lit ones are the harder admission: a light on reads as welcome, and welcome reads as known, and known reads as entered, and none of that is true. I have named them. I have counted their windows from the sheet. I have not opened a single door.

The act of writing the line into the shorter column took four seconds. The act of earning the right to write it took eight days of residency in a ruin that was already listed, already measured, already described in the record going back further than I like to say. I had read the Ruins of Umberhythe in three documents before I ever set foot on the threshold. Reading is not entry. The Ruins knew nothing of the reading.

Lano stopped, sat down in the road, looked back once at the dark shape of the place, then stood and came on.

Rurik had gone ahead at the last fork. He would be sitting at something by now, some doorway down the road that I had not yet named, waiting with his amber eyes on the dark beyond it.

I closed the book.

Twenty-five places on the sheet have never been named aloud on the road. Named in the record, yes. Named at the desk, yes. Named in the count, the column header, the margin note. But not aloud, not by a voice that was standing on their ground. That is a different kind of naming. The sheet does not know the difference. The places do.

The road turned and the ruin went out of sight. The shorter column had one new line in it. Everything else was as it was.

Mira, Lano said with her body, pressing close to my leg for a step and then ranging ahead into the verge again.
