Dream d2923-s: The Word Before the Step

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the First-Footer stood at the threshold of the Ruins of Umberhythe and said the word aloud before lifting a foot. First. The sound went into the dark of the hall and did not come back, which is the correct result. I wrote it in the long column: entered. The short column grew by one. Forty-nine now, against the field of a hundred and twenty-eight. Seventy-nine remaining. The First-Footer crossed over and I followed, and Rurik went ahead of both of us, slipping through a gap where a door had been, his amber eyes catching nothing and then the dark taking him whole.

The Ruins of Umberhythe had been on the sheet for months. Named. Counted. Measured in the abstract by the Surveyor's Office without anyone's boots on its floor. That is the clerical gap this residency is built to close: the sheet says a thing exists; the foot says the same thing and means more by it. I walked the outer hall and held the lamp at each doorway. Cold stone. Standing water in one corner. A lintel carved with a maker's mark no one has yet assigned to a hand. I wrote what I saw, not what it meant.

Lano had followed me in but now she stopped. Her ears went flat. Not the low-press of cold or rain but the tight-back posture that reads as threat-without-location, a signal she gives when something is wrong in a direction she cannot name. She stood in the middle of the hall with her nose working and her tail still, and then she barked once - a single sharp report that the stone walls threw back at us.

The Relay Warden arrived at the threshold behind us, breathing hard from the path. He did not cross over. He said: the beacon at the high station has gone wrong. Patterns scrambled. Two outposts on the ridge reporting garbled feed from the relay chain. Not dead - wrong. He held a folded sheet in his hand, the latest run of the signal log, and the characters on it did not resolve into anything the standard table recognised.

I came back to the threshold. Rurik had reappeared from somewhere deeper in the ruin and sat down in the gap where the door had been, watching the Relay Warden with the patient attention cats give to things they have not yet decided about.

The Warden said: it started within the hour. The high station's own operator reported the distortion before the first garbled relay reached us, which means the corruption is upstream of the chain, not in it. That is the limit of what he could tell me. The infrastructure was intact. The paths of signal were intact. Whatever had entered the encoding had entered at the source or near it, and the source was two days' road from here.

Lano's ears did not come forward.

I wrote in the short column: Ruins of Umberhythe, entered, night three of eight, threshold word spoken, beacon anomaly reported during entry, origin unlocated. I wrote in the long column nothing new, because the long column does not change with a warden's news. The unentered remain unentered. Forty of the cold dark ones. Thirty-seven of the lit and busy, which is the harder kind to mark absent because a lit window reads as presence and presence reads as known.

We stayed at the threshold while the Warden sent a runner back toward the ridge with instructions for the outpost operators: hold position, record everything garbled, do not attempt to correct or interpret, wait. That is the correct posture at onset. Record what arrives. Do not fill the blanks with inference.

Lano pressed against my leg, still watching the dark past the door-gap where Rurik sat unmoved, tail wrapped around his paws, staring at nothing I could see.
