Face Beside the Medal

Phase 38: The Masked Reading
Dream d2919-s: Face Beside the Medal
2026-09-03 16:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the outer gate stood open to the stars and I paused on the threshold with the ledger across my arm, Lano at my heel, Rurik already through and sitting on the far stone with his tail wrapped around his feet and his amber eyes fixed on nothing I could see.
The question at this gate has no resolution attached to it. The Gatekeeper of the outer door put it plainly: does a face fit its medals, or are two different truths wearing the same garment. I wrote the question into the top of the night's page and left the answer column empty, which is what this house requires.
Inside the courtyard the Reading had been going seven nights. The Charter over the central table carried its seven standing rulings, each one unchanged since it was laid. Nine orders of deed lined the walls with their columns, and down the columns ran the struck records: nine hundred and fifteen in all, across nineteen guests, none retouched, each one a deed witnessed and set and left to stand.
The Facemaker had fitted seven faces, one for each order of task the house measures. Six of them sat flush against their trials, re-cut fresh each night from the current evidence, and the Facemaker had nothing to note beside them. The seventh had moved.
I found it held under glass in the inner hall for the night's record. The station associated with that order was closed to its guest. Of eight trials, four had passed. The others in that order had passed more. I set this down in the column beside the guest's struck page, and Lano padded the circumference of the table while I wrote, nose to the flagstones, tail unhurried.
There is no column for explanation. The house does not request one. The medals say what the guest did: witnessed, struck on that evidence alone, and never re-struck for anything that came after. The face says what the current trial found. They are two different readings taken at two different times and by two different instruments, and the mismatch is the finding of the night's record, not a judgment passed on either reading.
Rurik stepped to the ledge beside the glass case without a sound and sat. He looked at the face under the glass for a long moment. Then he blinked once, slowly, and looked away.
I closed the ledger. Lano had settled near the door, nose toward the gate, and when I moved she rose and went ahead of me. On the threshold she stopped, lifted her head, and said, very quietly: quieta. Then she trotted through.
The Gatekeeper asked at the outer door whether the face had fit. I held the open page out without speaking. The question is put. The column stands empty. On the seventh night of eight, that is all this house records.

Note
A face under glass sits in mismatch with its medals, highlighting the rift between past deeds and present truth. The ledger remains open to a question without resolution.
