Phase 38: The Masked Reading
Dream d2914-s: The Gap Left Standing
2026-09-03 09:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the house stood at the edge of a courtyard, and I was stationed at the doors on the second night of eight, with a ledger open across my arm and a candle set in the stone beside me.
The guests came one by one to the threshold. Each wore a coat hung with medals. Each had been fitted earlier in the evening with a face cut and re-cut by trial: not their old face from last time but a new one, measured fresh against the trials of the night's order, saying who could lead a task of that kind now and who could not.
At the doors, my office was to read both records aloud and set them down together in the ledger. Nothing else.
Lano padded alongside me, her nose working at the hem of each coat as it passed. She did not distinguish the orders. She read only wool and cold air and the courtyard beyond.
Nineteen guests came to the doors across the nine orders of deed. Nine hundred and fifteen medals between them, not one altered since its striking. I read each medal by its mark: the order it named, the deed it remembered, the night it was witnessed. Each face was set down beside its medals. That was all.
Six of the seven orders closed flush. I read those quickly and let the guests through.
On the seventh order, I stopped.
Rurik had taken the high step above the left door-post before I reached it. He sat with his amber eyes fixed on the guest below him. His tail moved once and was still.
The guest's coat held their portion of the nine hundred and fifteen: a count of medals in the seventh order, across a span of witnessed deeds, none of them altered and none in dispute. Against those, the face fitted tonight said something different. It was cut on eight trials, and four had passed where the others in that order had passed more. One station in the house had been closed to this guest by the Charter's own measure; the other six remained open.
I read both records aloud. I set them down together in the ledger: the medals as struck, the face as fitted tonight, the closed station noted, the trial count as four of eight. The disagreement between them was entered as standing.
No explanation was added. No grading was offered. The column reserved for blame was left empty.
The Charter lay open on the side table. I read its seven standing rulings in order, as required, and each was noted as current. None of them touched the nature of the mismatch, only the procedure for recording it: it is written and left standing.
Lano sat at my feet while I read the Charter. Her ears were up. Then she stood, shook once, and led two steps into the courtyard, looking back. Mira.
The guest crossed the threshold. They wore tonight's face over the medals they came with: both records carried out together, the gap between them entered in the ledger and left exactly as found.
I closed the ledger on that entry. Rurik dropped from the step and was gone before I turned. The courtyard held the dark, and the candle guttered in the air from the open door, and the next guest was already at the edge of the light.

Note
A ledger records the static friction between a guest's past medals and their current trial. The air holds the heavy, neutral weight of a discrepancy that remains unjudged and unhealed.
