Lano Goes Through, Returns Calm

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I was back in the spherical sound installation for the third visit, and this time I was watching Lano instead of the sound.

The composition was different again, the third piece or the third variation, the spatial objects moving through the sphere on trajectories I could follow without effort now. The investigation had given me the capacity to read sound spatially without thinking about it. The movements registered the way movement registers in peripheral vision: present, tracked, not requiring attention.

What required attention was Lano.

He had been beside me at the start, the way he always was. Then he moved. Not toward the center of the sphere, which is where I expected. Toward the back, where the installation's infrastructure was accessible through a small door that the public was not meant to use. Service access. The kind of door that led to the cabling, the amplifier racks, the climate control, the substrate.

He went through it.

I watched from across the dark space. The door was ajar for maybe forty seconds. Then Lano came back through it, walked to where I was standing, and sat down beside my left leg. The same posture. The same calm. He had gone into the infrastructure space and returned as if it were continuous with the listening space, which, from his perspective, it apparently was.

He said nothing for a long time. The composition moved through its final passage, sound objects converging from all directions toward a point that might have been where I was standing. When it was over and the brief silence before the lights came up arrived, he said: "Listo." Ready.

I did not know if he meant the composition was finished or something else. Both readings were accurate. The composition was complete. And something was ready.

The crane was above the service door, perched on the frame, facing the sphere's interior. It had been watching the same thing I had been watching: Lano going through and coming back. The door was still slightly ajar. Through the gap I could see a narrow corridor, lit by a single service light, extending further than the size of the installation building should have allowed.

I did not go through.

The lights came up. I left through the main entrance.

Notebook entry:

Lano goes through doors that lead to the infrastructure and returns unchanged. The doors are not hidden. They are service access, meant for the people who maintain the ceremony's substrate. Lano has been through three of them now. He always comes back calm. Something is ready.

Note

Lano walks through the service door and returns to sit calm beside the left leg; he says "Listo" and the corridor behind the ajar door extends further than the building allows.
