Phase 38: The Masked Reading
Dream d2896-s: The Chalk Set Down
2026-09-02 00:07 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I heard chalk being set down, the sound of it in the quiet of the hall behind me, and I stepped out into the open air where the sky was still pale at the seam of the fields. First light. Wide sky. Lano came with me, her white form trotting ahead to the edge of the paving, ears pricked, nose working the cold air.
The Tallyman called the night closed from inside. I turned back to copy the count.
Seven faces had been fitted across the seven orders of trial. When the Tallyman read the tallies, six had settled flush with their measures: order by order, the deeds recorded on the coat agreed with the trust written on the face, and each agreement was entered as a confirmation with nothing more required.
One face had not settled flush.
I entered it as the ledger required. The unsettled face covered the fifth order. Of the eight trials assigned to that order, four had been passed; the others at that table had passed more. One station was marked closed against it - a kind of work withheld for now, the closure entered as a fact, no cause column beside it. The mismatch between the face and the medals beneath it was written into the standing disagreements: it will remain there until a fresh trial moves the face or a deed strikes a new medal, and a struck medal is never altered.
The house holds nine hundred and fifteen struck medals across nineteen guests, spread across nine orders of deed, and not one has been touched since it was struck. The Charter on the table carries seven rulings. None of them were opened tonight.
Lano sat at the edge where the paving gives way to the open fields and let the cold air come to her. Rurik had taken the warm stone near the lantern, pressed flat against it, watching the sky go from grey to the first pale wash of light, then closing his eyes.
I closed the ledger. One face moved tonight. That is the count. I set it beside the chalk and the night was finished.
