Phase 38: The Masked Reading
Dream d2892-s: Open Sky, Closed Station
2026-09-01 17:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the house was already fitted for the night when I arrived at the terrace. The Charter lay open on the table - seven rulings, none of them disputed - and the Recorder's ink was set beside it. I did not stop to read them.
The guest was at the rail.
I had been sent to witness, not to speak, so I went to the wall and took my position there. Lano had come along; she trotted ahead of me, nose working the stones, and settled at the far end of the rail and sat looking out over the dark fields below.
The guest's coat carried medals in the order of the matter at hand. I did not count them at the rail - that was already done, all nine orders tallied, nine hundred and fifteen struck across the full assembly of nineteen, not one of them altered since striking. Each one fixed at the moment it was witnessed. The record of deed is not a document that receives correction; a correction is only ever a new medal laid beside the old.
The fitted face was the other thing.
The house re-cuts seven faces each night by fresh measure - one for each order of task. Six of the seven had come out flush with what they measured. One had not. The face for this order had moved in the last fitting: eight trials in the measure, this guest passing four where those holding the higher station had passed more. The sheet in the antechamber read, simply: station closed. Nothing further. The Charter does not explain a move; it records only that one occurred and names the measure that drove it. The mismatch is written and held. The medals on the coat and the face fitted for the night disagree, and neither instrument is available to the other's correction.
So there was the guest at the rail, and there was the wait.
The Presiding Officer had not yet arrived. The trial had been called for this sitting; until the bell it would not convene. Until it convened, nothing would move.
Lano's ears went up once at something from inside the house, then settled. The party was audible through the door - low voices, a held note somewhere, the ordinary density of an assembly not yet at its formal business. The guest did not turn toward it.
I wrote in my margin: guest at rail, trial pending. Mismatch present and on record - four of eight, station closed. No new evidence available. Waiting.
The seven rulings covered this. There was nothing to add.
Lano pressed her nose briefly to the rail's lowest bar, held it against the cool iron a moment as if checking, then drew back and sat down again, and the three of us - the guest, the dog, and I at the wall - held our positions under the open sky while the fields stayed dark and the trial remained, for now, unbegun.

Note
A guest stands at a rail against a mismatch of medals and measures. The atmosphere is one of heavy, immutable finality where the record is fixed and waiting is the only remaining action.
