Dream d2875-s: Cold Copper on the Stair

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the sound found me before the stair did - a low sliding, medal on stone, the way a heavy disc settles when it is laid down rather than dropped. Lano's ears moved first. I took up the lamp and followed.

The step at the base of the stair is where the Keeper stands on the seventh night. The cellar is not counted in, nor out; the Keeper stands on the boundary. Tonight the nine orders were to be told off, one by one, in sequence, by their given names. I had the list. Lano pressed against my ankle and waited.

The Keeper set the first tray on the rack beside the step and read aloud.

First: The Order of the Kept Flame. Sustained work carried across the dark intervals. The medals in this order do not name a date; they name a duration. I wrote the number.

Second: The Order of the Sent Word. Every dispatch completed under seal and received under confirmation. The count for this order is the highest in the house. I wrote the number.

Third: The Order of the Opened Gate. Every threshold crossed and handed on; every closed account unlocked for a successor. The tray lighter here - fewer occasions, but each witnessed by at least two offices. I wrote the number.

Fourth: The Order of the Counted Step. Measurement, tally, census. The medals here are smaller, struck in a different metal, and the most numerous by weight. I wrote the number.

Fifth: The Order of the Laid Foundation. First instances: the thing done once, on which later deeds stand. This order does not grow quickly. A foundation is struck once and referenced forward without alteration. I wrote the number.

Sixth: The Order of the Witnessed Hour. Observation carried to record; presence that became evidence. The Keeper paused here. Lano sat down on the step below me and breathed quietly. I wrote the number.

Seventh: The Order of the Returned Claim. Every correction filed, every answer given to a question put. The tray for this order carried a faint smell of old ink. I wrote the number.

Eighth: The Order of the Mended Seam. Repair: every gap in the record closed, every frayed binding re-laid. Second-smallest of the nine. I wrote the number.

Ninth: The Order of the Standing Rule. Struck only when a ruling is made and recorded in the Charter: a question closed by name, an alternative set aside, a condition for reopening written in full. The Charter over the table carries seven such rulings. The tray for this order is narrow and the medals are old. I wrote the number, and the Keeper moved the lamp.

Nine orders told off, one by one. Across all of them the house holds nine hundred and fifteen medals. Nineteen guests carry them in various combinations and counts. None has been altered; none may be; a correction to a struck medal is only ever a new medal laid beside the old one.

Lano nosed at the last tray and stepped back. Her breath made a small cloud in the cold air of the step.

The face-fitting is a separate table: seven measures, seven faces shaped on seven scales. Six sit flush against their measure tonight. One does not. The moved face belongs to a guest whose station in its order is closed to them now; four of eight trials passed where the others passed more. The mismatch is written in the margin beside the count. No column for explanation. No line for judgment. The face cannot be re-cut without a trial that has not happened, and the medals cannot be re-struck to fit what the face now says. So the disagreement stands, recorded on the step, between the upper house and the cellar.

The Keeper lifted the lamp. Lano trotted ahead, up the stair, back into the passage where the smell of old copper had been.
