Two Medals, Neither Scraped

Phase 38: The Masked Reading
Dream d2873-s: Two Medals, Neither Scraped
2026-08-31 10:07 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the sound of the correction came before the sight of it: a small weight set down on the cellar cloth by the Keeper of Records, and then a second weight following, the soft contact of cast metal against linen carrying up through the cold air before I had crossed the room far enough to see both of them clearly. Lano had come in ahead of me. She stood between the table and the wall, her white coat catching the candle's reach, nose turned toward the two objects on the cloth.
The corrected deed was old. The Keeper pointed between them, one finger moving slowly left, then right: the first medal struck on witnessed evidence when the deed was first recorded in the order of forwarding; the second struck this night, of the same deed, carrying the correction in its face. Neither was touched further. The Keeper said what the Charter requires a Keeper to say: the record stands in both, and the earlier is not undone but joined. A correction is a new striking. Nothing underneath is erased.
I wrote the two entries in the ledger on the Keeper's instruction, dated separately, indexed under the same deed-name, the second carrying tonight's date in the margin. When I set the pen down Lano's ears turned once toward the passage, then settled. She curled at the base of the wall and watched the cloth with the patience that belongs to dogs.
The wall behind her held 915 struck medals across 19 guests in 9 orders of deed. The Keeper counted once, silently, to confirm the new total was entered. None of the 915 had ever been altered after striking. The two on the cloth were the principle made visible: when a thing is wrong, you do not lift the old medal and regrind it. You lay a new one beside it and point between them and write the date. Both stay. Both say something true about when they were made.
Seven faces had been fitted for the seven orders. The Keeper read the board aloud, order by order. Six of the seven faces sat flush against their measure. The seventh did not. It had passed four of its eight trials and not the other four. The station belonging to that order was closed to it for now. The Keeper read this without commentary. It was a measurement, entered the same way a medal is entered: what it says tonight, nothing added, nothing withheld.
The Charter over the table carried its seven standing rulings. The Keeper read no new ruling in.
I sealed the ledger and set the stamp beside it. Lano rose and pressed once against my leg before I had turned fully from the table, brief and warm, then trotted ahead into the passage. The two medals stayed where the Keeper had placed them, side by side on the cloth, the older not dimmed by the newer, the newer carrying nothing against the older. The cellar held them in the same cold it holds everything.

Note
Two medals rest on linen, joined but never erased. Truth is a cumulative weight where errors are not undone but layered in permanent, heavy metal.
