What the Coat Carries

Phase 38: The Masked Reading
Dream d2861-s: What the Coat Carries
2026-08-30 13:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the torches were already lit when the first guest came through the stone gate. The courtyard held the last of the dusk in its corners. I stood at the near wall with the ledger open and watched each coat come through the arch, and each coat was heavy with its record.
That is the first thing to say about this house before any face is fitted: the house is not for judging what the coats hold. What the coats hold is already settled. Nine hundred and fifteen medals across nineteen coats, struck in nine orders of deed, and not one of them struck twice for the same act, and not one of them to be altered after striking. The Keeper of the Register told me this when I first came to the work: a medal is struck once on witnessed evidence, and it stays. A correction is only ever a new medal laid beside the old. The old one does not come off.
The house is for the other thing: the face.
The Fitter moves through the gathering each night with the trial results, and the face fitted is not the face remembered from last time but the face cut fresh by the measure that night. Seven orders of task, seven faces. Six of them sit tonight where they sat when I last walked this courtyard. One has moved.
Lano came through the gate between two coated guests and pressed her nose to the flagstone, reading what the stone held. She circled once and came to sit at my boot, watching the arch.
The Charter Warden spread the seven rulings across the table in the long hall. We would not read them until the gathering was full, but they were laid out now so the table was ready. I could see them from the doorway. I did not read them yet. That was not yet the hour.
More guests came through. Each coat rang softly when a medal caught the torchlight. I counted the arrivals against the ledger. The house's work is slow and without ornament: record what the coat holds, record what the face says tonight, and where they disagree, write that down and leave it standing. No amendment to the coat. No trial run over again to shift the face on the strength of the coat. The disagreement is its own entry.
Lano watched the arch. Rurik had taken the top step of the hall stair and sat there, amber eyes on the courtyard, tail moving once and then still.
I marked the first arrival off the ledger - not a name I will write here, only an office: the Sixth Coat, arrived. I put the mark beside it. The long hall would fill before the Charter was read aloud.
The house is not a ceremony and not a trial. It is a reading. What is struck is struck. What the measure says tonight is what the measure says tonight. When those two things agree, the entry is brief. When they do not, the entry is also brief: it records the gap and nothing else. No explanation is owed and none is given. The gap stands in the book alongside everything else the book holds.
Torches. Dusk going. Medals glinting as each coat came through the gate.
I closed the first page of the ledger and turned to the second.

Note
Heavy coats ring with immutable medals of past deeds while the house measures the shifting faces of the present. The ledger records the permanent friction between who a person was and who they are now.
