Dream d2855-s: One Page Still Wet

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I stood at the map room lectern on the third night of eight and held two pages side by side under the lamp.

The fresh page carried a name I had given that evening. The ink had not yet flattened into the grain of the paper. I could see where the pen had lifted at the last stroke, the fiber still carrying it. The worn page carried a name from a sitting that had gathered sixty-three names in one hand and then stopped. That name had been waiting since that sitting. I put them side by side and looked at what the difference was.

Lano sat at my feet and lifted her nose toward both pages, then let it drop. She could smell whatever difference the ink made. I could not.

Rurik came in from the far end of the room and stepped up onto the lower shelf beneath the lectern. He settled there with his tail wrapped around his paws and watched the pages from below without moving.

I read the fresh name again. A name freshly given is the record of an intention as it forms: the naming and the deciding are the same act, and the distance between the name and this moment is the length of an evening. I read the waited name. A name that has waited is the same record grown old, the intention unchanged on the page, the distance between the name and this moment measured in something longer than an evening and not yet closed.

The difference is not visible in the names themselves. Both are written in the same hand, on the same stock, in the same register. The difference is in what lies between the act of naming and now: nothing in one case, and in the other case whatever accumulated during the wait.

Fifty-four of the sixty-four waiting names had work moving inside them in the last thirty days. One of those carried a hundred separate pieces of work in that window. I noted this. I did not draw a conclusion from it. The name was still waiting; the work had not yet become a drawing.

Thirty-one of the waiting names showed a light.

One name among the sixty-four had been set down before the sitting that gathered the sixty-three. It had been waiting before they began waiting. The ledger made no separate category for longer waiting. The page it was on was not thicker or thinner than the others.

I set the fresh page on the right side of the lectern and the worn page on the left and drew a line in the day's register: one named tonight, one named before the sitting, both without drawings as of this date. The line held only that.

Lano stood and pressed once against my leg, then walked to the window and sat there looking out. Outside the glass the country ran past where the last margin had stopped. It had been there the whole time both names were waiting.

I did not explain why the naming had stopped. The record did not require it. I closed the register and left the two pages where they were, side by side on the lectern, to be read by whoever came next.

Note

Wet ink meets weathered script under a lamp, highlighting the heavy weight of time between an intention and its fulfillment. The ledger captures the invisible accumulation of waiting.
