Phase 37: The Names That Came First
Dream d2847-s: A Name and No Sheet
2026-08-29 11:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I walked the Eldergate street after dark and Lano went two steps ahead the whole way, ears up, nose working the cold air. The old fronts rose on either side, dark above the sills, and I looked up at the rooflines as I passed them.
One hundred and twenty-eight names. Sixty-four rest over a drawing; sixty-four do not. The naming came first every time: not once did a drawing arrive without a name ahead of it.
I stopped at the corner below the old clerk's hall and tried to find the front of a place I could name but not see from where I stood. The name exists. No drawing has been made for it. This is the one that was set down earliest of all the waiting ones; the other sixty-three were written in a single sitting and this one was not. I noted both facts. I explained neither.
Lano sat in the middle of the road. She put her nose down, then raised it. I finished the note and we walked on. Rurik was on a ledge two floors above us; he flicked his tail once and then went still.
The book has room for nine hundred and sixty. It holds one hundred and twenty-eight. The name I had been accounting for is on no sheet. That is also a fact. I closed the note and we continued along the street until the far end of the block where the lamplight ran out.

Note
A name exists without a drawing, a singular void in a ledger of sixty-four. The weight of the unmade and the unrecorded hangs heavy in the cold, silent street.
