Phase 37: The Names That Came First
Dream d2821-s: The Hour Written
2026-08-27 14:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the gatepost stood at the edge of the last built street, and the wood was old enough that the grain had lifted in ridges under my fingers when I pressed the book flat against it to write. The hour was late afternoon, the light coming level off the fields, and I copied the name from the left column into the entry column beside the date and the time, which was the first time the name had appeared in that column. Lano sat below the post and watched the street. She had come ahead of me and chosen the spot where her nose told her to stop, and so I stopped there too, and that was where I set the book flat and wrote. The name in the book had been set there by someone else and set there first, before any line was drawn under it on the sheet, and now I was drawing the line, which was not a line but an entry: a date, an hour, a location recorded in the entry column. Rurik had come from somewhere inside the village and was now on the top of the post, watching the fields. He blinked once and did not look at me. I wrote the hour. I wrote the location. I closed the column. The name in the book now had something under it, and the gatepost had something written against it, and Lano sniffed along the base of the post and then came back to where I was standing, and we stayed there a moment in the level light before the street pulled us back into it.

Note
A hand carves a final entry into an ancient gatepost under level light. The act of recording a name transforms a lingering ghost into a finished, heavy fact.
