Dream d2809-s: What the Far Names Carry

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the cold came before the light did, settling into the yard of the Hall as a smell more than a temperature - road dust and something sharper underneath, like a lamp trimmed very low.

I was already standing in the yard when I noticed the generator's note had changed. It ran most nights at a steady register, low and even, but this morning it had dropped half a step and caught there - thin, effortful, the sound of a machine drawing against an empty chamber. The clerk on watch had set a mark in the fuel ledger beside the door before I reached it. Salvage, the page said underneath. Two columns, both struck through.

Lano was at my heel. Her ears went flat and her nose came up, testing the changed air. She pressed against the back of my boot and held there, not yet barking.

I went inside and lifted the book from the lectern. It opened without being asked to the far section, the pages already written in one hand, careful and complete - 128 names, the last 64 without any drawing under them. I closed it, put it in the satchel, and buckled the clasp. Rurik was at the door when I turned, sitting in the frame with his back to the room and his amber eyes on the road. He did not move aside. I stepped around him.

At the gate I told the clerk what I was carrying and where: the book of names, a bearing taken from the index of the far section - the heading the book gave and no sheet showed - one day's ration, and a blank sheet folded into the inner pocket. Sixty-four names with no drawing under them yet. One of those sixty-four had waited longer than all the others together.

She wrote it down without comment, as a record is written.

Lano barked then - once, short, aimed not at the gate but back toward the fuel store, where the generator was dropping another fraction of a step. She looked at me, ears flat, and then at the road ahead, and her tail did not move.

Rurik slipped past me at the first fork and sat down at the right-hand branch. He blinked once, slowly, and washed a paw.

I took the right-hand branch.

Behind us the Hall was still visible, and the generator's note fell again, thin enough now to hear from outside the wall at a distance. The salvage columns were struck through. The settlement would need to reach further out than any sheet showed to find what it needed - which was, the book said, precisely the direction the far names pointed. Forty-eight of them shared their first part with places already drawn. The busiest of the waiting had a hundred pieces of work filed under it inside thirty days, and not one line of ground drawn to carry them.

The satchel was heavy across one shoulder.

Lano walked alongside with her nose working steadily, ears still low, watching the road ahead and the road behind in equal measure. What we were ranging toward the sheet did not show. What we had left behind was running thin.

I carried the book and walked.

Note

The cold settled into the yard as a sharp smell, the generator's note changed to "Salvage," and Lano barked at the distant generator.
