Dream d2793-s: The Crack and the Census

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the map room was lit by one lamp at the table's center, and I unrolled the old sheet across the boards, weighting its corners with whatever came to hand. Rurik was already there, perched on the high shelf above the window, watching. Lano circled once and settled at my feet.

The sheet carries sixty-five places. I counted them again, not because the count had changed but because the counting is its own kind of record. Ten of them show a light: a mark beside the name meaning someone had been there recently enough for the column to read warm. The other fifty-five: present, marked, but quiet.

What the sheet does not carry is the harder measure. The rolls of notes beside it, the ledgers that feed the survey and the ones that take its outputs, all of that together accounts for two hundred and seventy-nine places. Sixty-five on the sheet. A hundred and seventy-four on nothing at all. I wrote that number at the margin in pencil, small, not as a verdict but as a datum: the edge of the sheet is a fact about the sheet.

Sixty-one of the undrawn places were worked inside the last thirty days. This round I walked past the edge and counted sixty-one; twenty-eight of them are alight. The light does not belong to the sheet. The sheet knows nothing of it.

I was looking at the seven marks that point at ground no reader can reach. Seven entries with names and coordinates and status columns filled in careful ink, and the places themselves are gone, closed, or so changed the name no longer lands on anything real. The mark records that something was there. It cannot record that the thing is not there now. The sheet has no column for that yet.

Then Lano's ears went flat.

She was up before I heard anything, pressing against my shin and then stepping away toward the door, looking back. Her tail was low. I was still holding the pencil when the sound came: not loud, more a settling, a long slow groan from somewhere in the infrastructure below the newer quarter. The lamp swayed once on its chain. Rurik's tail moved, once, and he turned his head toward the east wall.

I put the pencil down and went to the door. Lano was already in the corridor, moving fast and low. The second sound came heavier: a crack that traveled through the floor, and then from outside, in the gap between the buildings, I could see it. The old cable run, the one that had been routed through a foundation from the previous era, the one the surveyors had flagged and not yet rerouted. The building it anchored to had shifted. Not fallen. Shifted. Twenty centimeters, perhaps, at the upper story. The cables hung loose where they had pulled from the cleat, drooping across the lane.

There were voices below, quick and technical, not panicked. The night crew, assessing. I heard someone call for the load ledger. I heard the word for the outer supports.

Lano barked once, a short sound, and the crew had already heard.

I looked back through the door at the map room, the sheet still unrolled, the weighted corners holding. The lamp had stilled. The seven dead marks were still seven dead marks. The hundred and seventy-four undrawn places were still outside the sheet's knowledge, and Larklow Town, one day old and not yet on any sheet at all, was out there past the edge with the rest of them, the way everything is past the edge that the sheet has not yet reached.

The building had not fallen. The crew was below and working. Whether the foundation would hold the night was a different question, and not one the sheet could answer, and not mine to answer either. I could hear the clink of tools and the steady voices, and Lano's ears were still flat, and the cables still hung in the lane, and the lamp on the table burned where I had left it.
