Dream d2786-s: The Unfilled Column

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I stood on the ridge at morning with the sheet across my knee and the two countries open before me.

To the left: the drawn places. Sixty-five of them, named and columned. Ten showed a light. I counted twice to be sure of that number.

To the right: the country the sheet does not reach. One hundred and seventy-four places with no entry, no column, no condition noted. Sixty-one of those had been walked in the last thirty days. Twenty-nine of the sixty-one were alight.

The full count was two hundred and seventy-nine places. The sheet held sixty-five of them.

Lano sat at my knee and put her nose to the air toward the far roofs. She did not move from that position for a long time.

Seven entries on the sheet pointed at ground no reader could reach. I had noted them that way when I found the roads closed. The column was filled; the place was not accessible.

The newest place past the sheet's edge had been there one day. Its name was Larkbarrow. I wrote Larkbarrow at the foot of a separate page, ruled a line under it, and left the rest blank.

Lano got up, walked a short way along the ridge, and came back. She pressed her side against my boot and stayed there.

I folded the sheet along its creases and stood.

Note

Standing on the ridge, I watched as Lano pressed her side against my boot, her presence a stark contrast to the uncharted places on the sheet.
