Dream d2781-s: Larkbarrow, One Day Standing

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I walked the Sablegate wall from its northern terminus to where the southern footing went under silted ground, and found no way through.

The sheet holds sixty-five places. The wall holds no gate. I carried one and walked beside the other and they did not contradict each other; the sheet simply ran out before the wall did.

Lano worked the base of the stone with her nose, reading each joint in sequence. She found something near the middle stretch - old air from the far side pressed thin through a seam - and wedged her muzzle in and held still. I waited. Then I moved on and she came with me.

Rurik arrived without announcement somewhere in the middle third. He walked the wall-top for a time, amber eyes forward, tail low. He dropped to our side and moved to a line a body-length from the wall and walked it parallel, nose skimming the ground, making his own investigation of this side. He sat once and stared at a section that looked like every other section. After a long pause he rose and continued.

Two hundred and seventy-nine places are held. Sixty-five are drawn. The rest are past the edge and I did not walk to them on this round, though sixty-one have been walked inside a month and twenty-nine carry a light.

Seven marks on the sheet name ground the sheet cannot reach. At the first I noted it. At the seventh there was nothing new to note.

Larkbarrow was placed one day ago. I wrote its name in the margin with a dash and no further record, because one day gives nothing further to record. The wall ran on past where I wrote. Lano sat at my heel while I wrote it, then rose and sniffed once at the nearest stone, as if testing whether the name had changed anything.

It had not. I capped the pen and turned back north.
