Dream d2771-s: Where the Timber Is Green

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the road into Amberholt was new enough that the gravel still shifted under my boots. Lano walked at the verge, where the cut ground met the grass that had not yet been cleared, her nose down and her tail moving steadily.

The first house was on the right. The roof was on and the walls were built on three sides; the fourth was still open framing, and the field showed through the uprights. A woman working a barrow of wet mortar stopped when she saw me. I told her I was recording new places, and asked when the ground here was first broken.

Forty-one days ago, she said, and turned back to the mortar.

I opened the record and found the column for places not yet drawn, and wrote: Amberholt. Age at time of walking: forty-one days. Condition: building in progress. Light present: yes. I drew a line after it.

Lano had found a sawn-off post end in the grass and was nosing at it, then left it and trotted toward the next frame, which was only foundation stones so far, level and well-set in the turned earth.

I followed her and wrote the next line down.
