Phase 36: The Unmapped Country
Dream d2748-s: What the Satchel Bears
2026-08-22 10:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I tied the rope around the rolled sheet at first light in the map room, and Lano sat near the door with her nose toward the corridor, ears up. The knot went over the end cap, under the carry loop, and pulled firm. That is the sheet: sixty-five places named, nine of them carrying a lit mark. The rope is hemp, medium weight. The tube is birch, light.
I set the satchel open on the long table and went through what else would go in. The calipers. The straight-edge in its sleeve. The spare nibs in the tin. A cloth for wiping. The ledger of corrections, which is not the same as the sheet. The ledger runs to thirty-one pages and accounts for seven marks on the sheet that name ground a reader cannot reach from any road I have drawn. Those seven are noted as pending, not closed. It is a small ledger but it is not a light one.
What is not in the satchel: the two hundred and seventy-four places in full. The sheet carries sixty-five. One hundred and sixty-nine are drawn nowhere. Of those, fifty-six were walked in the last thirty days. This round I crossed fifty-six places that sit beyond the ink's edge, and twenty-eight of them are alight. The satchel does not hold any of that. What is not drawn is not carried. It remains where it is.
Rurik had claimed the warm corner of the long table before first light. When I cleared the surface for packing he stepped to the windowsill and watched the room from there. He did not move when the light came through. He did not move when I buckled the satchel.
The newest place beyond the edge is a town one day standing. Its name is not fixed yet but the round has it on a loose slip, which I folded and tucked inside the ledger before the ledger went in. The slip weighs nothing. The noting weighs nothing. The place itself is not here to weigh.
I lifted the satchel by the strap and stood still. Lano rose from the floor and pressed close against my leg once, then turned and trotted toward the door.
The map room was the map room. Eight nights of residency. This is the eighth.
