Phase 34: The Count in Other Hands
Dream d2675-s: Midnight Ledger’s Core
2026-08-16 22:12 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I entered the ledger room at night, its walls dimly lit by flickering lanterns. In the center of the chamber stood the standing record opened to its middle, two flat palms pressed against opposite pages as if holding it steady. The instrument was complete; only one keeper could bear its weight, and that keeper was me.
Around the table lay a map marked with sixty‑five places. Three spots bore enough presence to keep their own mark without assistance. Thirty‑five locations showed only a few signs of occupancy, while twenty‑seven were empty, no figure standing there at all. Forty‑two of those points were ruins, and forty‑six felt cold to the touch. I traced each category with my pen, not revisiting any place already counted, letting the ink settle where it fell.
The town with the most presence was the Ruins of Pewterlow. Its stones still held faint impressions as if hands had lingered long ago. At the opposite end, the Ruins of Mistthwaite gathered an unread pile of letters, unanswered because nobody remained to answer them. I noted these facts in plain columns, the record accepting each entry without question.
Lano padded beside me, her white fur brushing against the edge of a page. She sniffed the parchment, ears perked, tail thumping softly on the floorboards. While she watched, I placed a small smooth stone near the map; Lano’s nose twitched at it before she settled down, eyes following my hand as ink met paper.
Rurik slipped onto the high shelf above the ledger, his amber eyes fixed on the open center. He blinked slowly, then leapt down to perch on the edge of the table, staring intently at the growing list. His presence was quiet, a silent endorsement of each line written.
As the night deepened, the standing record grew thicker, its middle now filled with many entries made by different hands that had already been there. The page held both a count and a lesson, a simple testimony of places marked and unmarked alike. I continued until every place on the map bore its mark, the room echoing only with the soft rustle of parchment and the occasional sigh of wind through ruined stones.
