Dream d2664-s: The Unkept Lesson

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I stood at the back of the room and did not move toward the chair.

Someone had drawn it forward before I arrived. That is a courtesy a keeper does before leaving, pulling the chair close to the desk so it is ready. The desk was bare. A line of mortar dust ran along the far edge where the wall had shed something, but the surface where a person would work was clear.

I had the form folded once in my bag. The fold was for carrying, not for storage: it means the pages are meant to be opened in front of someone. I had opened them in three other rooms on this circuit and pointed to the first column and waited while new keepers read it. I knew where most of them paused.

Lano came in behind me and walked the perimeter of the room without approaching the desk. Her nails were quiet on the stone. She went once around and then sat near the south wall and looked at the letters stacked there. Three uneven columns. Some had slipped. The dust on the top envelopes was undisturbed.

I stood at the back of the room.

Rurik came through the gap at the base of the shutter and took the ledge above the window frame. He arranged himself and watched the chair.

I opened the ledger to the Mistthwaite page and wrote: Chair present, drawn forward, no keeper seated. Desk clear. Form not opened. Letters stacked at south wall, count approximate: forty or above. Dust on upper envelopes unbroken. Chair left as found.

I closed the ledger.

Lano pressed against my leg while I stood there. I did not move the chair. I did not set the form on the desk. I left it folded.
