Dream d2626-s: The Word in the Jamb

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Clerk of Seats stood in the doorway between the ledger room and the hall, and I stood on the other side of the open book.

The book lay on a reading stand set into the jamb. The Clerk had one hand on the left-hand page and one on the right. The hall behind the Clerk was unlit. The ledger room behind me held the single lamp we had been working by for six nights.

The Clerk looked down at a column of names and then up at me.

"Keeping," the Clerk said.

Lano, who had been sitting at my heel, lifted her head. Her ears came forward.

The word was alone. Not inside a sentence. Not qualified. The way you say a place-name when you mean the place and only the place. The Clerk said it the way you say a word after writing it for six nights, to hear whether it sounds like what it means.

I wrote it in the margin. Keeping. No other annotation.

Rurik was on the high sill above the doorway. He watched. His tail lay still along the stone.

The Clerk's hand returned to the left-hand page. I turned back to the lamp. Lano set her chin on her paws.

The word was in the margin. It had been in the air. Now it was only in the margin.
