Dream d2624-s: Ink That Outran Its Truth

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I was at the long table in the ledger room on the fourth night, and the lamp had been burning long enough to feel like furniture. Lano lay under the table with her chin on the floor, ears lifting each time a page turned. The wall map hung behind me. I had pulled the thin stack of recent tallies forward and was comparing them, column by column, to what the winter pages said.

The entry was for a working post in the eastern tier - not named here by its inhabitants, only by its office: the Assessor's Reach. Three hands listed as of the last full accounting. Enough to keep a mark. I had copied that number forward without checking it, because the winter columns had seemed reliable and I was moving quickly through a long list.

Tonight I checked.

The wall map showed the Reach differently. I went back to the winter entry and read it again carefully. Three offices, filled, as of the cold months. But the spring correspondence - sorted by region rather than date, which was the mistake - named one of those offices vacant as of the third month. Not disputed. Not explained. Simply vacant, stated plainly in two lines and then not mentioned again.

I sat with that for a moment.

The entry was stale. Three had been true and was not true anymore, and I had been carrying it into every subsequent column without knowing it. The number had outrun the thing it named.

I wrote in the margin of the winter page, small and level: stale, third month. Not corrected here.

That was all I did. The correction belonged in its proper column, in proper order, and I would not make it tonight in the margin of a past accounting. I noted what I had found. I left the page as it was.

Lano came out from under the table and pressed close against my leg, warm and still for a moment, then padded back and curled near the lamp.

I turned the page. There were sixty-four other places to account for, and the night had several hours left in it.
