Phase 33: The Wider Count
Dream d2618-s: Tiers of Quiet
2026-08-12 20:11 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I slipped into the ledger room on the fourth night of six, the tall slate stretching up like a silent wall of paper. The only light came from a lone lantern flickering against the chalk dust that hung in the air. Lano padded beside me, her white fur brushing my boots, ears perked and tail wagging low as she sniffed the faint scent of lime. Rurik settled himself on the narrow ledge above the slab, amber eyes half‑closed, his whiskers twitching with each breath of cold air.
I lifted a piece of charcoal and began to mark the first tier. Across the broad surface I wrote Emberford, the letters thick and steady, then moved down a notch and added Frostridge on its own line, followed by Osierlow one row lower. Each city occupied a single clean band, their names standing alone against the dark slate.
Below those three lines the space opened for many more marks. I turned my attention to the ruins that had never felt a footstep. With deliberate strokes I filled the next tier with Mistthwaite, noting in the margin the pile of unanswered letters that seemed to swell like forgotten whispers. The chalk slipped across the stone as I continued: Frosting, Mossness, Zephyrden, each name spilling into its own narrow groove, the column for “neither running nor gone” cut short to fit exactly seven characters, Stil…, its edge ragged at the end.
I worked downward, layer by layer, letting the tiers climb higher on the slate. For each ruin I added a small mark indicating cold, another tick where it remained left in good order, and a faint slash when it did not. The thirty‑five ruins stretched over many rows, their names forming a dense forest of chalk against the dark background. As I wrote, Lano nudged my ankle with her nose, then trotted forward to rest beside a fresh line, eyes bright as she watched the dust settle. Rurik shifted his weight, perched closer to the ledge, tail flicking lazily; he stared at the growing script, blinking slowly whenever I paused.
The seven quiet places counted before lay already settled on earlier tiers, their entries complete, untouched by
