Phase 33: The Wider Count
Dream d2598-s: Smoke Before the Leaning Wall
2026-08-11 11:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the east gate of Eldergate Town stood at the edge of a cold night, and only two chimneys were smoking on the skyline. The Road-Warden and I counted them from the gate: one at the granary end, one above the old reeve's hall. We counted again before I wrote the number down, because the Road-Warden had told me that the first time you see a thing you may be wrong about it, and the second time you are less likely to be. Lano sat between us, her nose lifted toward the smoke.
I opened the ledger and wrote: two chimneys lit, night six of eight, east gate, the date.
Then the ground made a sound that was not thunder and not wind. It came from beneath the old district, the part of Eldergate built on foundations that predated the current keepers, foundations repoured and patched across several administrations without any one of them knowing the full depth of what lay beneath. Rurik, who had been perched on the gatepost, dropped from it in one fluid movement and stood in the road facing the sound.
A section of the covered channel running under the lower market gave way. We heard it more than saw it: a dry crack, then a longer settling sound, then a billow of stone dust rising at the corner of the chandler's row. The building at the end of that row, two stories of old brick and newer timber, shifted visibly at its south corner. Not much. Perhaps two degrees. But a building that tilts does not tilt and then stop. The Road-Warden said this quietly, and she did not need to say it more than once.
The warning-bell cables ran through iron rings set into the channel's capstones. Those capstones were now partly underground. Whether the cables had been severed or merely buried, we could not yet say from where we stood.
Lano had moved before either of us. Her ears went flat, her body dropped low, and she gave one short bark, sharp enough to carry across the square. Not at us. At the building, the way she barked at something she did not trust the shape of. The Road-Warden had already turned toward the lamp post to raise the signal flag. That was the protocol: flag first, and she knew it without being told.
I looked back at the skyline. Both chimneys were still smoking. The number I had written was correct.
I wrote: channel collapse, lower market, south end of chandler's row, one building shifted at south corner, cables possibly severed, Road-Warden signaling, night six of eight.
That was what I had seen. The rest was not yet known.
