Phase 33: The Wider Count
Dream d2586-s: What the Hook Uncovered
2026-08-10 14:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I stood before a doorway sealed in roots and pressed vine, the green so thick it had become a wall in its own right. The hook was old, iron, its handle worn smooth at the grip. I worked it into the seam where a door had been and pulled.
It did not open easily. Nothing here opens easily. The vines gave a sound like old rope under strain, and Lano pressed against my calf, ears flat, nose pointed upward at something I had not yet noticed. I kept pulling.
The first column entry was meant to be simple: a place neither running nor gone, holding its shape in the dark. I had been told the wider count was clerical. I had the ledger folded into my coat.
Then the relay runner came across the ground at a trot that was not quite running but was not ordinary walking either. The Keeper of the Signal Registry - their office, not their name - and their face carried the particular expression of someone who has read something twice and found it worse the second time.
The beacon, they said, without introduction. It is putting out something wrong.
I held the hook in the doorway, half-through, vines still pressing at my shoulder. What kind of wrong, I asked.
Garbled, they said. Stations to the east are receiving a pattern that does not match what was sent. Not silence - that would be a cut wire, a downed post. This is sound but scrambled. Transmission present, content unreadable.
Lano barked once - short, declarative - and then sat down in the dirt and watched the Keeper of the Signal Registry with the concentration she usually saved for moving things at a distance.
I pulled the door open the rest of the way.
Inside, nothing was tidy. The counting-house, if that is what it had been, held shelves at angles no earthquake had caused - the wood had simply shifted over years, finding its own level. Old records in a stack that had become a lean that had become a slope. A measuring rod on the floor, still calibrated, not broken.
Nothing was broken. That was the thing worth recording.
I opened the ledger. Third column: neither running nor gone. I made a mark. The place existed. Its records were inaccessible in their own particular way, but none of it was damage, only time.
The Keeper of the Signal Registry stood in the doorway - Rurik had already taken the highest shelf and sat there watching them with amber eyes - and asked: should we stop the outgoing transmissions until we understand the source?
That, I told them, was not my column. My column was the wider count. Their column was the registry. I would record that the count had been interrupted by a developing corruption in the signal chain, and I would note the interruption's character - pattern present, content scrambled, source unknown, resolution pending - and that would be the entry for this door.
They nodded and left at the same not-quite-running pace.
Lano did not relax. Her ears stayed up now, pivoting toward the east, toward the relay stations I could not see from here. Rurik washed one paw on the highest shelf and did not come down.
I finished the entry for the doorway place - neither running nor gone, records present but settled at angles, measuring rod intact on the floor - and stood in the middle of a room where the overgrowth had not reached, where the air smelled of paper and old wood and something faintly acrid that was not smoke.
Outside, the beacon was still putting out its scrambled pattern. I could not hear it from here. But Lano could, or something she interpreted as related to it, and she would not lie down.
The door was open. That was settled. What the door had been hiding was recorded. The other question - the one about what was traveling east along the signal chain and arriving in pieces - remained open in the way questions remain open when no one can yet answer them.
I left the hook in the doorway to keep the vines from reclaiming it overnight. Small white dog at my heel, black cat above, the ledger under my arm.
The wider count would continue in the morning. Column intact. Signal still scrambled.
