No Column for Closed

Dream d2584-s: No Column for Closed

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where four of us met at the crossroads in the last dark of the eighth night, each carrying our portion of the count. The tidy cold country stretched flat in every direction, the sky open and pale at its edges where morning had not yet decided to arrive. Lano sat at the center stone, nose lifted, reading something in the air I could not name.

The Surveyor of the Western Reaches spread her papers first. The Keeper of the Northern Index laid his beside them. The Archivist of the Shallow Districts and I completed the square. We had each walked different portions, and we had each returned with the same question written in the margin.

We had found the same thing, separately, four times.

Of the cold places not yet settled by the last phase's walk, most bore the marks of orderly closure: keys returned to their hooks, lamps trimmed and extinguished, doors pulled to in the correct order. Not one had simply stopped. Someone had made a last round and a last note and left with intention. The Ruins of Frosting, the Ruins of Mossness, the Ruins of Zephyrden - these three alone showed the other pattern, the one where the leaving was not managed.

But the ledger's column read only cold.

The Keeper of the Northern Index traced the heading with one finger. Cold. He looked at the next column. Ruin. He looked at the space between them, where no column was.

We had no word for closed.

Not abandoned, not failed, not fallen. Closed. The lock turned deliberately, the accounts settled, the forwarding address written on a slip of paper that was filed somewhere nobody would think to look. The Ruins of Mistthwaite still held its pile of unanswered letters, but that was not abandonment either - more like a pause that outlasted whoever had pressed it.

Lano stood, circled the center stone once, and pressed against my leg. I held my papers flat against the wind.

The Archivist said: the column needs a word.

None of us wrote one in. That was not what this walk was for. We had come to the crossroads to compare and to find whether we agreed, and we agreed. The rest belonged to whoever kept the ledger.

Forty cold places. Forty-one left in good order. Thirty-six ruins among them all. Five lit cities still burning at their centers - Emberford, Frostridge, Osierlow, Willowholt, Willowhythe - and the town of unfinished roads at Eldergate holding its own kind of open question. The numbers sat clear on four separate papers and they matched.

We folded our papers. The crossroads held us a moment longer. Lano trotted a few steps toward the northern road, then stopped and looked back.

I noted that the four findings agreed. I noted that the ledger had no column for what most of the cold places actually were. I noted that this was the last night of the eight, and the residency was complete.

Then the crossroads was empty, and the cold country went quiet, and the morning came.
