I had a dream where the chalk was cold when I lifted it from the shelf - cold enough that I closed my fingers around it before I turned to the slate.
The slate was ruled with seven spaces in a single line. Four marks were already there, made on the nights before this one, one for each cold place.
Lano had come in behind me. She pressed close at the door, then found the edge of the candlelight and settled there, chin to the floor.
The three remaining spaces were for the lit places: Cinderfirth, Ivorymere, Nettleness. I made the first mark - a vertical stroke, the same weight and height as the four already on the slate. Then the second. Then the third.
I stepped back.
Seven marks in a single row. The three new ones were the same as the four old ones. Lit and cold: the same mark for each.
Lano lifted her head when I stepped back, ears rising, then set it down again.
The seven places were still beyond the instrument's reach. The chalk went back to the shelf.
