Dream d2552-s: Readings on the Table

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the count was called at the stated hour and I carried the mended readings to the Hall.

The benches were full. Wardens from the active settlements, clerks at the narrow side tables, the usual witnesses along the far wall. Lano came in beside me and found the foot of the central table, where she curled small and set her chin on her paws.

The instrument had been blind for two nights. Seven places it could not reach - whether fires still burned or hearths had gone quiet, it could not say. The Walker went out on foot. The findings came back on a folded sheet, and I set that sheet beside the mended transcript before the count began.

The Keeper of the Ledger opened the record.

The lit places first. Cinderfirth: a reading. Ivorymere: a reading. Nettleness: the Walker had passed through before dawn and found the watch-fire burning at the east post, the settlement in its usual order. Three places answerable.

Then the cold ones. Elderhaven quiet, last confirmed reading four nights ago. Glenholt the same. Mistgarth: no word returned. Sablegate: the Walker reached the outer marker and found it dark.

Four places.

I wrote each name as it was read. The Keeper paused between them - that is the custom. You do not rush the cold names.

The question that had been deferred came around again now: how to count a place that is quiet but still standing. Not removed, not in ruins - only silent. The answer, when it came, was the same one the ledger has always used. You count it in its state. Quiet is a state. You write the name in the column and you write beside it what the readings say. If the state changes, you update the column. The ledger does not collapse the distinction between quiet and gone. That distinction is the thing being preserved.

Rurik was on the high shelf above the clerk rows. I had not seen him enter. He sat with his amber eyes open on the room, his tail hanging straight.

The seats already closed - the Convener's, the Scribe's - were noted as settled, carried forward from the previous session. Tonight's count added four cold places to the column and confirmed three lit. Seven read in total. The record closed.

I carried the papers back to the ledger room. Lano walked beside me down the corridor and pressed close when I stopped to latch the door. Both sheets filed together: the mended readings and the Walker's findings beside them. One count, two sources, one column.
