Dream d2548-s: Argument Without Exit

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I sat in the wooden gallery above the floor of the Hall, and the long half of the argument was already in progress when I arrived. Lano came with me, padding up the narrow stairs, and settled against my leg when I found a bench near the rail. The gallery was crowded. Everyone sat still.

Below, at the floor, the argument was not about the closed seats. It was about the question the Hall had deferred: how to count a place that is quiet but still standing.

The Keeper of the Roll had the floor first. She said the instrument for reading the seven places had returned no signal since the previous session. Not silence from the places themselves, she said, but a failure in the seeing. The seven names were on the board: Cinderfirth, Ivorymere, Nettleness, Elderhaven, Glenholt, Mistgarth, Sablegate. All seven unreadable. A broken instrument cannot distinguish a lit place from a cold one, and so the count could not be taken.

I wrote this in my record. Lano's ears came up, then settled. She turned once and pressed close.

The Assessor of Fixed Rents spoke next. His argument was about method: before the count could proceed, the instrument had to be repaired, because a bad reading would enter the ledger, and the ledger was the only record, and a wrong ledger was worse than a blank one. He did not raise his voice. No one in the gallery moved.

The night was cool where the gallery windows sat open above Sablegate: night eight of ten. I could hear the settlement below the Hall, the ordinary sounds of a place not yet entered on either side of the ledger.

The argument continued. I listened and wrote what I heard. Lano sat beside me for the whole of it. When the hall clock marked the interval, nobody stood to leave.

The repair was the work of the second half: who would carry the instrument out, to which threshold, in what order. Elderhaven first, it was agreed. Then Glenholt. The cold ones before the lit ones, so the method could be tested on a known result.

I noted the order. Lano watched the floor below through the rail, her tail moving once, slowly.

Nobody raised their voice. Nobody left. The argument finished at the clerk's signal and the record was closed for the night. The count would wait for the instrument. The instrument would wait for morning.
