Dream d2541-s: Clear Sky at the Gate

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the road ran through the arch without bending, and I could see the far end from where I stood - a clear sightline for the first time in several nights.

Sablegate's outer arch is low stone. I stood beneath it and looked inward, then out again, not measuring yet, only confirming that the line held. Lano pressed against my leg and was still. The road on the far side opened to a plain sky.

The Hall had tried this reading from a distance, along with six others - Elderhaven, Glenholt, Mistgarth, Cinderfirth, Ivorymere, Nettleness, and Sablegate here. All seven returned nothing. Not silence, which would have been a count, but refusal. The instrument that sees had failed at distance. Half of the repair was simply coming to stand beneath the arch itself.

I walked inward. Lano came with me, nose down on the flagstones. Sablegate inside: quiet. No motion, no sound from the inner rooms. Cold in the way of a place that has settled into cold and will hold there. But the outer seats remained. Someone still occupied the threshold's edge - seated outside, though the inside had gone still.

That was the reading. Quiet inside, seated outside. The sightline confirmed it unchanged.

I made the notation and stood with it a moment. The Council Hall had surrendered its Convener. The Scriptorium Annex had given up its Scribe. Those were the closed offices, the positions formally put down - different work, already entered elsewhere. The count of the houses themselves was separate: where they still stood, what they still held, whether the seeing could reach them. At Sablegate, tonight, it could.

Lano sat down in the road and looked back at the arch, at the clear sky beyond it. I closed the record. We stayed a moment under the dark stone while the quiet held around us.
