Phase 32: The Count of the Cold Houses
Dream d2539-s: What the Lamp Sent
2026-08-07 08:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I stood in the signal house on the headland, and Lano walked a slow circuit of the room before settling by the door, her shoulder against the frame.
The lamp was lit. The Hall had not heard from this place in weeks, and the first thing was to check the glass.
The glass was clouded. Not broken - clouded, which is different, and takes longer to accept. I cleaned it from the inside out, working in strips, and when I set the cloth down the light carried further and the figures in the log came clear.
All the named places had gone dark to the Hall's reading - not because they had changed, but because the glass between us had failed. That was the first finding: the fault was in the seeing, not the seen.
I read what was recorded. Three names stayed lit in the ledger: Cinderfirth, Ivorymere, Nettleness. Four did not: Elderhaven, Glenholt, Mistgarth, Sablegate.
That was the count. Four.
I wrote it in the signal book without comment. The Council Hall stood without its Convener. The Scriptorium Annex stood without its Scribe. Both entered as fact, both given a row with a date and an office and nothing further. No account follows a closed seat in this ledger.
When the transmission went out I read it back once to confirm it was plain. It was: four cold, three lit, two offices closed, all named places now readable to the Hall. The glass had been the problem, and the glass was clean.
Lano pressed against my leg while I waited for acknowledgment. She did not look at the glass or the log. She waited because I was waiting.
The Hall answered with a single character - the mark that means received.
I closed the log. The lamp stayed lit. That was the work.
