Dream d2533-s: The Agreeing Cold

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I knelt at the hearth in Elderhaven with a measuring rod and took the depth of the cold, Lano waiting on the threshold. The rod went in at the grate level and did not warm. The reading came back at three finger-widths below the ash-line, which put the last fire in the season before harvest, or just at its edge. I wrote this in the margin of the survey sheet, not as a conclusion but as a measurement. The sheet had columns: place, fixture, reading, season-index. Elderhaven's row filled in one cell at a time.

Outside, through the window above the hearth, the orchard stood with fruit still hanging. Not rot - the fruit had simply not been picked. This was the second reading of the same season. Two independent things now said: before harvest, or the cusp of it. I wrote the orchard into a second row on the same line. The columns agreed. The survey did not say why the hearth had gone cold or why the orchard had not been worked. It said only that both pointed to the same interval, and that the interval was long.

The Hall's instrument had been reading fog all week. Tonight one house came through clearly. I closed the survey sheet, folded it to the Elderhaven tab, and set it back in the transit case. Three cold houses remained to be measured. The instrument was holding.
