Phase 32: The Count of the Cold Houses
Dream d2524-s: The Fastest Slow Day
2026-08-06 07:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where Lano found two crates behind the reading-house stairs, wedged between the east wall and a rack of empty frames. The crates were wooden and unmarked. No label, no origin date, no count written on the lid. Inside: spare glass, each piece wrapped in packing straw, each piece needing to be held to the candle and checked against the measure-rod before it could be filed in the rack.
The instrument that reads the seven places had stopped reading. The Hall knew this before Lano arrived; the record from the previous night said only "instrument returned no seeing" and the column for each of the seven stood blank. Cinderfirth, Ivorymere, Nettleness - still lit, or believed to be, from the last good reading. Elderhaven, Glenholt, Mistgarth, Sablegate - gone cold, or believed to be, from the last good reading. The Council Hall and the Scriptorium Annex - seats closed, offices vacant, noted in the ledger without comment.
The glass was the work. I sorted each piece by thickness and cut size, working from the smallest up, with Lano stretched out against the empty crate. Some were chips. Some were full panes. A few were odd shapes, clearly cut for a specific frame that no longer existed in the current layout of the reading-house. These went in a separate pile: usable but not immediately placeable.
By afternoon the crates were empty. The rack was full. The instrument had been missing a pane in its upper viewer - one of the small ones, cut for a specific seat in the glass - and among the sorted pieces I found a match. It went in. The fit was close but not exact; a sliver of gap at the lower-left corner. Close enough to test.
The test reading came back partial. Three of the seven places returned signal. Which three were not yet clear - the calibration marks needed resetting before the column labels could be trusted. But something was coming through where nothing had come through before.
I wrote "two crates, one day, instrument partially repaired" in the margin of the night's page. It was the fastest entry of the week. The blank columns for the seven places remained blank. The work for tomorrow was already legible.
