I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I stood before the reading-house door at the edge of a long silence. The latch had rusted through - not from neglect exactly, but from the particular way iron behaves when it goes untouched through a full turn of weather. The door was still in its frame. That was the first thing to note: the frame held.

The blind night had come some time before this. All seven of the places had gone dark to the instrument at once - not one by one, as places usually do, but together, in a single failure of seeing. The Hall had recorded it and then set the record aside, because you cannot count what you cannot see, and pushing a bad count into the ledger is worse than leaving the column empty.

So the door had stayed shut.

Lano was the one who came to open it. Not to restore what had been lost - the two seats were closed and the closing was settled - but because the instrument needed to look again at the five places still listed, and looking required the door to be unlocked first. The three lit ones and the four cold ones deserved an accurate line. They had been waiting, patiently, inside an empty column.

The rust gave way with a sound like a question being answered too slowly. The door opened inward. The air inside was cool and had the quality of a room that had been keeping itself, undisturbed, for the span it needed.

The work was clerical. That was its nature. You set the instrument level, you confirm what is still standing, you write down what you find. The cold houses are cold because they are cold, not because of anything the count says about them. The reading-house does not make the condition; it only sees it clearly enough to record.

Lano crossed the threshold and set the lantern on the table where lanterns belong. Night one of twelve. The door stayed open behind - there was no reason now to close it.
