Dream d2517-s: The Turned Chair Waits

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Hall was quiet at the late hour and Lano stood at the clerk's end of the long table, looking up toward the head of it. The chair there faced away from the room, as it had been left, turned toward the wall by the one who had occupied it. The Hall had noticed this before, on other nights. Tonight it noticed again, and held the noticing longer.

The question that had been deferred at the close of the last phase - what it means to count a place that is quiet but still standing - had returned. The Hall had agreed to come back to it, and here was the coming back. A chair turned on purpose is a record. It is not a rule. The Hall said this without saying it. The walls held the understanding the way stone holds cold.

Seven places were to be counted. None of them were readable from this room tonight. The instrument that does the seeing had failed, and the instrument was the first thing. You cannot take a count on a bad reading. This is not a position, it is a condition of counting. I wrote it at the top of a clean page: the instrument first.

The two seats that had been formally closed - the seat at the head and the seat beside the copying ledgers - sat in their closure. They were not absent from the record. They were closed entries. A closed entry is not missing. The Hall understood the difference and moved on from it the way a clerk moves on from a settled column: not forgetting, not returning.

The five lit places and the four gone-cold waited in the dark outside the Hall's windows. Cinderfirth, Ivorymere, Nettleness - lights still showing. Elderhaven, Glenholt, Mistgarth, Sablegate - gone to cold. The count could not be finished tonight because the seeing was broken. I noted this too: count deferred, instrument under repair.

The turned chair at the head of the table did not speak. It did not need to. It was a chair, and it had been turned on purpose, and the Hall was not a place that confused furniture with precedent. Lano capped the pen and left the page open to dry.
