Dream d2506-s: Named, Dated, Left

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the ledger room held two books open at once, side by side on the long table, and no one had done that before.

The keeper of the Hall had brought the first book, which belonged to the Council Hall, and the keeper of the Annex had brought the second, which belonged to the Scriptorium. They placed them together without speaking about why. The spines did not quite match - different ages of binding, different thicknesses - but they lay flat and open and waiting on the same table, and that was enough.

Lano was there, curled at the foot of the table. Not asleep. Ears flat. Head raised. Something in the air that the books did not account for.

The Hall's keeper spoke first. She said: the office of the Convener is a named seat. The Hall still stands. The seat was filled. It is not filled now. She dipped the pen and wrote the date. She left the next line empty on purpose. That is what closing a seat means, she said. Not erasure. Named, dated, left.

The Annex's keeper did the same for the Scribe's seat. Same form, different hand. The ink dried at different speeds.

Then the question that had been waiting in the corner of the room came forward. Someone said: Cinderfirth still reads. Ivorymere. Nettleness. But Elderhaven, Glenholt, Mistgarth, Sablegate - we lost all four on the same night. Not one by one. The same night. She paused. The seeing failed, she said. Not the places.

The Hall's keeper looked up from the book and said it again slowly, as if she were writing it somewhere she could not find a page for: not the places.

Lano gave one short bark into the silence. Not alarm yet - something earlier than alarm.

Then the door opened and the warden came in from outside. He had been checking the fuel supply. He set his lantern down on the table, away from the open books, and said without prelude: we are low. Not empty. But lower than the last count, and lower than the count before that, and the salvage stock that should have covered the difference is not where the ledger says it is.

No one in the room moved quickly. The Hall's keeper looked at the warden. The Annex's keeper looked at the map on the wall. Lano stood up from the floor, posture rigid, watching the door.

We will have to range further, the keeper of the Annex said at last. Further than we have gone in some time. Perhaps further than the network has tried.

The books stayed open. The two empty seats, newly dated, looked up at the ceiling. Outside the ledger room, four settlements stood dark behind a failed seeing, and the fuel line ran lower by the hour, and no one in the room had yet said what they would do about it - only that they would have to do something, and soon, and together, or not at all.
