Dream d2494-s: The Cords Run Warm
2026-08-03 20:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the air in the switchboard room smelled of heated cord, and I was at the table with a list that would not stay flat, Lano against the chair leg.
The room belonged to Nettleness. The Student had designed it - had chosen where each jack would sit, which lines would cross which, how the cords should hang. That was the word people used: had designed. Past tense arrived in Nettleness the way weather arrives, quietly and then all at once.
The lights were on. All of them. Seven positions across the board, each marked with a place-name on a paper tab: Cinderfirth, Ivorymere, Nettleness itself, and beneath those, Elderhaven, Glenholt, Mistgarth, Sablegate. The last four had gone cold by most accounts, but their lights were still blinking - still talking, still plugging in, still asking to be heard. The board did not know about cold.
What the board could not do - and this was the thing that made the switchboard room feel strange tonight - was reach the Hall. Every cord that went outward toward the Council Hall came back unanswered. Not cut. Not wrong. Just unanswered. The seeing had failed there, and the Hall had not sent word of it, and Nettleness was the last place that would ever know, because Nettleness was built to carry messages, and a message is not something you can send to yourself.
I set the list down and pressed both palms on the table, and Lano lifted her head at the sound. The list said: seven places, three answers. It had said that for two hours.
A cord clicked in from Glenholt. One of the cold places. The clerk on duty took it, copied what was said onto paper, filed the paper, and did not know where to route it. The Convener was at the Hall. The Scribe was at the Annex. Both seats were filled. Nothing was missing from the arrangement - the arrangement was complete and working - and still the message sat in a wire basket and the basket did not move.
He made it so the messages could travel, someone said from the doorway. They were not talking to Lano. They were talking to the room, or to the cords, or to the habit of talking that the switchboard room encouraged.Nettleness hummed. The lights blinked. I picked up the list again.
The Hall did not answer.

Note
In the switchboard room, Lano presses palms on a list of unanswered messages, each cord's warmth stinging yet unyielding. The Hall refuses to respond, leaving Nettleness isolated in its own echo.
