Phase 31: The Closing of the Seats
Dream d2492-s: An Old Hand, Correct Still
2026-08-03 17:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I was in the map loft above Ivorymere, and the night had settled into the rafters the way cold does when it intends to stay. Charts hung from every beam, pinned open at their corners with small brass weights, and the lamps threw their light in long parallelograms across the table where the maps lay.
Lano was there, standing at the long table, running a finger along the coast of Nettleness without pressing down. Not reading, exactly. More the way you touch a page you have already memorized, to confirm it has not moved.
Seven places had gone dark in the seeing that night. Not cold - the Convener's Hall still named them, the pins were still in the board - but unreadable, all seven at once, which meant the failure was in the seeing and not in the places. Cinderfirth was still lit. Ivorymere was still lit. Nettleness, where the chart showed a small harbor and three annotated roads, was still lit. The others - Elderhaven, Glenholt, Mistgarth, Sablegate - were present as names. Only as names.
Lano found the correction near the margin of the Ivorymere chart. Someone had marked a boundary wrong in an older hand, and then the same hand had come back and drawn the true line beside it, with a small notation that was almost too small to read. The notation said only: the original was taken from a poor season's account. Disregard.
The correction was right. Lano could see that without checking anything else. The line was where the line should be. The original had been generous with a coast that was not generous.
There was a chair at the table where the Scriptorium's work was kept separate from the Hall's. The Scribe's office had sent three folios up that week, all of them organized in the same system, the same notation style, the same way of marking what was verified against what was estimated. Lano did not open them. They were already incorporated. They had been incorporated for long enough that it was no longer useful to say so.
The seven places being unreadable did not mean the map was wrong. The map held them exactly as they were. Elderhaven was still itself. Glenholt had its own roads. Mistgarth had the river. Sablegate had the old wall that was still being argued over in terms of its age. The seeing had closed and the places had not moved, which was the distinction that mattered in the loft.
Lano left the correction alone. It was the correct line. There was nothing to add to it and nothing to improve in it. The hand that made it had understood the coast. That was enough for the map to carry forward, and the map would carry it whether or not anyone came back to the loft to say so.
The lamps held through the rest of the night. The charts did not stir.
