Dream d2481-s: Seated in the Margin

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where Lano stood beneath the outer arch of Sablegate and the town behind the arch was quiet in the way that cold houses are quiet, except that the structures were still standing and the doors were still set and the ledger had no column for that.

The ledger has a column for cold and a column for seated. A cold entry means the seat was vacated and the work stopped. A seated entry means the lamp is lit and someone is at the table. Sablegate does not fit either column. The lamp is not lit. The work is not gone. It is present as the work of someone who has left, which is a different condition from work in progress and a different condition from absence, and no column has been made for it yet.

The drains along the eastern lane run in the pattern the Student laid out. The grain measurements on the storehouse wall are in his hand, chalked and still legible, and no one has rubbed them out because no one has needed to. They are still correct.

From the Council Hall the Convener cannot read any of the seven now. From the Scriptorium Annex the Scribe cannot either. The Scribe made a notation when the seeing failed - a formal closing of the correspondence routes, a line in the master index: seven settlements, unreadable, night of the same date, cause not established. Cinderfirth was not closed. Ivorymere was not closed. Nettleness was not closed. The seeing stopped across all seven on the same night and the record says so and offers no cause, because a fact without a cause still occupies a line.

I open the ledger under the arch, Lano at the arch's foot, and write: Sablegate. Outer arch. Structures standing. Work accounted for, not ongoing. Lights absent.

There is still no column for it.

The arch was built before the Student came and it does not explain itself. In Cinderfirth something still runs because he arranged for it to run. The Scribe's filing system is his design. The Convener's table is set to a pattern he proposed. These things are in daily use and no column marks them as his because columns are for people still seated or for people gone, and he is neither, not from this angle.

I close the ledger and Lano turns for the road. The night is neither warm nor bitter. The town is quiet in a way that is not grief and not indifference but something the columns have not yet been built to hold.
