Dream d2478-s: Cold Fault in the Seeing

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I was the walker, and the signal house above Mistgarth was shut but not sealed. I found the door on the latch and the instruments inside still faintly warm from whoever had last used them, though that warmth was old. The windows faced north across the headland toward the dark where the Hall should have been visible, its lights a fixed point in every careful map I had ever read.

I worked the levers in the order written on the board. Nothing answered.

Lano stood in the doorway behind me, not speaking, only watching the instruments. When I turned she gave me a small nod that meant: keep going, not: it is working. I turned back and tried the sequence again. The night outside was clear. No fog. No interference in the air that I could name. The fault was not in the weather and not in Mistgarth lying quiet below the headland. The fault was in the seeing itself.

I wrote in the log: the Hall was not raised. I wrote the time. I left the cause column empty because I did not have a cause, only the absence of a signal where a signal had always been.

What I knew, sitting there: the Convener's seat in the Council Hall was still filled. The Scribe's seat in the Scriptorium Annex was still filled. Cinderfirth, Ivorymere, Nettleness - places built and running, their work continuing without needing to be seen from here. I knew this from records, not from the instruments. The instruments had nothing to say about any of it tonight.

What I could not reach: Elderhaven. Glenholt. Mistgarth - though I was standing on its headland. Sablegate. And the Hall itself, the fixed point.

All seven gone unreadable in the same night.

That is not a coincidence of failures. That is one failure with seven faces. I wrote that too.

Lano came inside when the cold came up off the water. She looked at the log, looked at the empty cause column, and said: it is not the places. I said: I know. She said: then we write what we can reach and we come back in the morning.

I turned the instruments off in order. I latched the board. I left the log open to the page I had been writing on, in case anyone came to read it before morning.

The shuttered house held the cold better than the warmth. That is what signal houses are for in the end - not sending, but keeping a record that sending was attempted, and on what night, and by whose hand.

Note

I was the walker in a signal house, trying to reach the Hall but failing. Lano watched silently as I wrote down the absence of a signal and left the cause blank.
