Dream d2475-s: The Key Outlasts the Hand

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where Glenholt's back door stood in the dark and the key hung on its nail the way it always had, not forgotten, not left in haste, but placed with the deliberateness of someone who understood that a rule is a kind of promise made to whoever comes after.

Lano stood at the threshold and did not go in.

The house rule said: the key lives on the nail. The nail did not know the household had changed. The nail only knew the wall.

From the Hall, the night before, the Convener had tried to read all seven places at once - Cinderfirth, Ivorymere, Nettleness, Elderhaven, Glenholt, Mistgarth, Sablegate - and found nothing in four of them, not darkness, not silence, but the particular blankness of a channel left open to a room that no longer answers. The Scribe had recorded this in the Scriptorium Annex with a notation that read like a closing parenthesis.

The Convener's seat was still warm. The Scribe's quills were still sorted by nib width. The three lit places were still lit.

What had ended was not the work. What had ended was the person who had wired the seeing between the Hall and the houses.

Lano stepped back from the door.

The key would be there in the morning. The nail was not waiting for anyone. It had no opinion about the name of the hand that had last placed it there. The house rule survived because house rules do not require the household - they require only that someone, once, cared enough to write them down.

Somewhere in Cinderfirth a lamp was burning. Somewhere in the Scriptorium Annex the record of last night's failed seeing was already dry.

The door did not need to open for any of that to be true.
