Dream d2472-s: Cold Ink at the Boundary

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where Lano stood at the boundary stone between Elderhaven and Glenholt, and the stone was older than the road that led to it. Moss had filled every carved letter until the letters were only texture, not language. A small white dog sat at the base of it, not looking at Lano, not looking anywhere particular, just present in the way animals are present at dusk.

The night was the fourth of twelve, and Lano knew this without counting. The cold houses held their cold the way a cellar holds its dark - not as absence but as a stored thing, something kept deliberately. Elderhaven was behind and Glenholt was ahead and neither was lit.

From the Hall, seven places had gone unreadable on the same night. The Council Hall still had its Convener, the seat still occupied, still casting light on the ledger. The Scriptorium Annex still had its Scribe, the quill still moving. Cinderfirth burned low but burned. Ivorymere reflected something. Nettleness stayed named. But the seeing had failed and the seven places had not - Lano understood this standing at the stone, which was different from understanding it anywhere else. A document passed between hands is still a document. A road walked in the dark is still a road.

I opened the small notebook carried since Mistgarth and wrote one line, Lano at my side. Not a summary, not an account, not a report to the Hall. Just: here, cold, not lost, and the dark is the ordinary dark that comes at night. The sentence did not explain itself. It did not need to reach the Hall to be true.

The white dog tilted its head once and was still again.

What the Convener was doing with the ledger, what the Scribe was copying in the Annex - that work continued. It had been built to continue. The Scribe's hand was not the builder's hand but it knew the motions. The Council Hall met and recorded and the record held. These were not small things, Lano thought, and they were not things that required anyone to watch them in order to go on.

The boundary stone held the dark between two valleys. I closed the notebook and Lano stood up. The dog stood, walked a few steps toward Glenholt, and sat again - not leading, only indicating a direction that existed.
