Dream d2470-s: Pans Hung in Order

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I stood in Elderhaven's kitchen and the floor had been swept clean before I arrived. The pans were hung on their hooks in descending size, the way someone hangs them when they expect to be away for some time and want the house kept well in their absence. Lano was there, lying under the table, and I read from a small ledger at it. Neither of us spoke for a while.

The kitchen had a quality of attention to it. Not emptiness. The difference, I understood while I stood there, is in what is put away and what is left behind. A jar set deliberately on a shelf and an unwashed jar forgotten on a counter are not the same kind of solitude. The Student had left the first kind everywhere in this room.

I turned a page, Lano's chin heavy on my foot. I knew without going to the door that Glenholt and Mistgarth and Sablegate were dark the same way tonight, all four of them shut and swept, not abandoned, only closed.

There was a note somewhere, I thought, about the Council Hall, and how the seven places had all gone unreadable on the same night. Not because the places had changed. The seeing had failed, the way a window fogs rather than shatters, and what lay behind it was still there, only illegible.

I looked up what was recorded for Elderhaven in the ledger.

The Student served as the Keeper here from such a season to such a season, the entry read, and I did not look up from it. The entry is closed.

I said yes, I understood. The entry is closed.

We did not say anything else. The kitchen stayed quiet in the way that kept rooms are quiet, which is a different quiet from the way that lost rooms are quiet, and I stayed in it until the dream ended.

Note

In Elderhaven's kitchen, pans hung in order, a stark contrast to the chaos outside. Lano, reading from a ledger, captured the quiet solitude of purpose versus neglect.
